Geshe Sonam Ngodrup and Ven. Khedrup: Stages of Meditation

Kamalashila's Stages of Meditation

The first 3 evenings with Geshe Sonam Ngodrup were such a succes that he was requested to continue his teachings in the coming months. We are happy to announce that Geshela has kindly agreed to continue his talks on this text four more evenings, twice in May and twice in June, with Venerable Khedrup translating into English.

NB: It is not necessary to have particpated in the previous sessions to follow and enjoy the coming ones! Besides, if you're interested, videos of previous teachings in this series are available here

The text that will be discussed is Kamalashila’s Stages of Meditation. Geshe Sonam Ngodrup’s warm and informal style and the excellent translation of his Canadian interpreter Ven. Khedrup make his classes very accessible. Before moving to Canada, Geshe Ngodrup taught at Maitreya Institute for several years.

We are very happy with this opportunity for our students to reconnect with their teacher.

These talks are also very suitable for new students: a great opportunity to receive a teaching from a Tibetan geshe (Geshe is the highest degree for monks of the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, comparable to a doctorate in theology)

Dates and time: Wednesday May 11 and 25 and June 8 and 22, 2022, 19.00 - 21.30 hrs. Online only.

The text “Stages of Meditation” is a commentary by the Dalai Lama on a rare text by ninth-century Indian Buddhist scholar Kamalashila that was written in Tibet to correct some Chinese misinterpretations of Buddhism that were influential at the time. Khamalashila's short work is not widely known today, but according to the Dalai Lama, it is a most important text, and is worthy of study by those new to Buddhism because ''on the basis of this knowledge you will be able to understand other treatises without great difficulty. This text can be like a key that opens the door to all other major Buddhist scriptures.’ '

The book is widely available, ISBN 9780834842137, e.g. at https://www.boeddhaboeken.nl/stages-of-meditation-paper.
