A Special Painting Retreat with Andy Weber
Special painting retreat
NB: The subject of this course has been changed from Buddha Maitreya to Mañjuśrī due to the advice given by His Holiness the Dalai Lama for the swift return of Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche.
Tibetan Art
Have you ever wanted to learn how to paint traditional Tibetan art? We’re privileged to have renowned Tibetan thangka painter, Andy Weber, leading this workshop at Maitreya Instituut Loenen.
New students will be introduced to the principles of Tibetan art and older students will be able to practice and develop their skills.
The course will focus on:
- perfecting canvas making,
- making paints from natural colours
- the technique how to make your own gold paint from gold leaf.
The transmission of how to properly use natural colours is important as they do not pollute the planet and are the most permanent.
Part of the course will focus on “Mar.tang” style of painting, which means gold lines on a red background. Also called “Tsel tang“ – after the red Vermilion used in these paintings.
What will I need?
Please note that if you do not already have a stock of art materials, purchasing everything you need will be a sizeable investment. However, these materials should last you a long time.
The minimum you will need is the Drawing Material list, to learn how to draw Mañjuśrī. In this case you would not need to bring brushes and inks. If you want to advance then you will need the minimum supply of paints (marked with an asterisk in the Art Materials list*), as well as the brushes. If you want to make a big jump and progress in your learning, you will need some of the natural colours, so Andy can show you how to prepare them and make them into paints. If you want to learn how to prepare your own gold paint, then you will need to bring a book of loose gold leaf.
