Hatred is often born from seeking a fixed identity in contrast to others. Compassion transcends this adolescent narrow-minded self-centredness. Compassion gives purpose to our lives, brings acceptance of our own pain through the understanding of someone else’s and helps to weaken oppressive social structures by bridging divides. In this way, compassion is the mother of all spiritual traditions, and a supreme vehicle to the experience of transcendence.

For 5 years, Ven. Nur Artıran and Ven. Losang Gendun have nourished a friendship centering especially around their shared love of the teachings on compassion by the 13th century Sufi Mystic Jalâluddîn Rûmî and the 8th-century Indian Buddhist Master Shantideva. They invite you to share in their exchange and bring new life and warmth to these teachings that are so urgently needed in these times of conflict.
Ven. Nur Artıran is an authority on Mevlânâ Jalâluddîn Rûmî and the founding President of the Şefik Can International Mevlânâ Education and Culture Foundation in Istanbul, Turkey.
